Theory and practice of error control codes: block and convolutional codes design techniques, performance analysis.
|
| Error control coding is attractive as a mathematical theory but gives rise to a number of practical issues. Elwyn R. Berlekamp, one of the main researchers in the field, summarizes these by three fundamental questions:
(1) How good are the best codes?
(2) How can we design good codes?
(3) How can we decode them?
This course develops the basics and the state of the art concerning these problems, which are still active areas of research today. It is primarily devoted to students who which to work in the field by learning the fundamentals of communication theory. Emphasis is made on Hard decoding techniques. Soft decoding lies beyond the scope of this course and is studied in later, more advanced, lectures.
